EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW BEFORE YOUR STAY IN ST BARTH
Welcome to St Barth
Saint Barthélemy is not a destination like any other. This French overseas collectivity in the Caribbean owes its reputation to a rare balance: elegance without ostentation, unspoiled nature without compromising on comfort, discretion without lowering the bar. Here, white sand beaches sit alongside architect-designed villas, fine dining and the boutiques of leading luxury houses.
What sets St Barth apart goes beyond its beaches, however beautiful. It's a human-scale island, free of large resort complexes or crowds, where each village, Gustavia, Saint-Jean, Flamands, has kept its own character. St Barth appeals to travelers seeking a genuine change of scenery, without ever compromising on the standard of service they expect.

4 questions
What makes St Barth different from other Caribbean islands?
St Barth stands apart through its small size, which gives the island an intimacy rarely found elsewhere, and its status as a French collectivity, which shapes its way of life and its distinctly French cuisine. The island's level of security is notably high, a criterion increasingly valued by a discerning clientele. Finally, St Barth's tourism offering and infrastructure rank among the most upscale in the Caribbean, from villas to boutiques, hotels and restaurants.
Is St Barth a French island?
Yes. Saint-Barthélemy has been a French overseas collectivity since 2007, when it administratively separated from Guadeloupe to gain its own autonomy, particularly over taxation and certain local regulations, while remaining fully part of France on an institutional level. This French identity is present throughout the island: in the language, the currency, the cuisine and the way of life.
What is the best time to visit St Barth?
St Barth can in fact be visited year-round, aside from the most sensitive stretch of the hurricane season. The "Festive" season, from mid-December to early January, is the most sought-after and priciest period, driven by the year-end holidays. High season then continues through April, with the dry, sunny weather that draws so many visitors. The rest of the year, from May to November, is low season, with more accessible rates, overlapping with the hurricane season (June to November, peaking between August and October). During the peak of hurricane season, from late August to mid-October, many of the island's establishments (hotels, restaurants and shops) close.
What is the weather like in St Barth year-round?
St Barth's climate stays warm and sunny throughout the year, with sea temperatures generally ranging between 26 and 27°C (79–81°F). Short, localized downpours, known locally as "grains," can occur but typically last only a few minutes before the sun returns.

Can you reach St Barth by boat?
Yes, St Barth is also accessible by sea, notably from Marigot or Oyster Pond on Saint-Martin. This option appeals to travelers who prefer to skip the flight or want to take in the coastline during the crossing. It's also the most affordable way to reach the island.
What's the simplest route from the US or Europe?
From the United States, the most direct connection is usually via San Juan, Puerto Rico, followed by a Tradewind Aviation flight to St Barth. From Europe, most travelers connect through an international flight to Saint-Martin, then reach the island via the ten to fifteen-minute air shuttle.
Travel requirements
2 questions
What documents do I need to enter St Barth?
A valid passport is required for all visitors, regardless of nationality. We also recommend checking that the name on your travel ticket exactly matches your passport, an important detail for connections through Saint-Martin.
Do I need a visa for St Barth?
This depends on your nationality. One point worth highlighting, as it often surprises European travelers: a Schengen visa is not sufficient to enter St Barth, since the island is not part of the Schengen area. Exact requirements vary by country of origin; we recommend checking what applies to you before departure.
Beaches and activities
4 questions
How many beaches does St Barth have?
Despite its small size (21 km² / 8 sq mi), St Barth boasts a remarkable number of beaches, somewhere between fifteen and twenty depending on the count, with experts disagreeing on an exact figure since some secluded coves are hard to tally. Each one has its own character, from lively beaches to hidden coves, sport-focused spots and unspoiled shores.
Which beaches are must-sees?
Saint-Jean brings the island to life by day, with its beachfront restaurants and water sports. Saline and Gouverneur capture the island's raw beauty, free of any development or noise, for those seeking peace and quiet. Colombier, reachable only on foot or by boat, takes a bit of effort to reach but rewards visitors with an unspoiled cove and an almost wild setting.
What water activities can you do?
The waters around St Barth lend themselves to a wide range of activities: surfing, sailing, diving, snorkeling, paddleboarding and deep-sea fishing. The island's Nature Reserve, established in 1996 and covering nearly 1,200 hectares of land and sea, protects some of the Caribbean's best diving spots, home to a rich marine life of sea turtles, coral and tropical fish.
Are there spas and wellness options on the island?
Yes, St Barth is home to several luxury spas offering treatments inspired by local and Caribbean ingredients. Treatments can take place in intimate settings, whether in-room, on a private terrace overlooking the sea, or even in a beachfront pavilion.

What is St Barth's culinary reputation?
A French island at the heart of the Caribbean, St Barth is sometimes nicknamed the "little France of the West Indies," a status that largely explains the quality of its dining scene. This French heritage draws a remarkable concentration of chefs trained in leading establishments, and the island's restaurants carry a distinctly French sense of craft and service, thousands of miles from mainland France.
Where do you go out in the evening in St Barth?
In the evening, the energy centers on Gustavia, home to the island's most sought-after tables and addresses. This nightlife, discreet and selective, is part of what gives St Barth its renown.
Do you need to book restaurants in advance?
Given the island's small size and the high demand during peak season, we strongly recommend booking your tables in advance, especially for the most popular addresses and during the year-end holiday period.

What budget should I plan for on the island?
The budget for a stay in St Barth varies significantly depending on the type of villa, the season, and the style of vacation you're after.
How do you get around the island?
St Barth's hilly terrain and lack of public transportation make renting a car nearly essential for exploring the island at your own pace. Quads and scooters are also available. Depending on the villa you book, a 4x4 vehicle may be recommended, or even necessary, to reach some of the steeper locations. Taxis are also available by reservation.
Is there good mobile and internet coverage?
The island benefits from solid mobile coverage through local networks, with stable 4G in most inhabited and touristic areas. Public Wi-Fi is also widely available in hotels, villas, restaurants and marinas. Real estate — Buying in St Barth
4 questions
What are the steps to buying a villa?
The first step is to define your budget precisely, then identify the must-have criteria for your villa: pool, garden, number of bedrooms, lot size. From there, it's essential to research the local real estate market, ideally with the support of a reputable agency that can guide you through every step of the process.
What structure should I buy under (personal name, SCI, SAS)?
The generally recommended approach is to begin the purchase in your own name to secure the property quickly, then use the due diligence period to determine, with your notaire or advisor, whether a structure such as an SCI or SAS would better suit your situation.
What fees should I plan for beyond the purchase price?
Beyond the purchase price, which generally already includes agency fees, buyers should budget for so-called "notaire fees," which are in fact mostly made up of taxes, amounting to roughly 6.5% of the sale price. Additional costs may apply depending on your situation, such as preparing a power of attorney or certified translations.
Is investing in St Barth a good idea?
St Barth's real estate market is characterized by limited property availability combined with the ongoing appeal of the luxury market, two factors that have historically supported property values on the island.
